Abortion may be legal in Canada, but access to services greatly depends on where you live.

Abortion rights advocate Robin Schwartz told CTV News on Monday that although the procedure was decriminalized in Canada in 1988, as a result of a Supreme Court decision.

"Factors such as stigma and limited healthcare funding limit access to abortion, as does geography. Depending on where you live and which hospital you live near, it may be very difficult for you in your community to access an abortion, and often in these smaller places, doctors or hospitals do not want to say they perform abortions, and this is what is happening in Canada in 2022."

Concerns about access to abortion have escalated in recent days after the US Supreme Court ended nearly 50 years of constitutional protection for the procedure last Friday by overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling.

About half of US states are now expected to ban abortion in some way as a result.

If you do not live in a large urban center like Toronto or Vancouver, access to abortion services may require leaving your community or province and spending out-of-pocket money to travel elsewhere to have the procedure performed.
