Ban on the use of straws, bags, and plastic cutlery in Canadian restaurants

Restaurants and cafes in Canada stopped using straws, bags, or plastic cutlery as of Wednesday, noting that the government's battle to halt the use of these single-use materials has not yet succeeded.

The gradual ban on importing, manufacturing, and selling plastics was adopted last year as part of a decision made by Ottawa to achieve zero plastic waste by 2030.

However, in November, a Canadian court repealed a law that classified some plastic products as toxic following a lawsuit filed by Canadian plastic producers.

The government has appealed this decision, which could have direct consequences on the ban of single-use plastics. The law was reinstated on Wednesday, pending a final ruling on the matter.

Charles Degen, a 29-year-old surveyor from a restaurant in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu located 40 kilometers from Montreal, said, "It is very good that the law forces merchants to stop using these materials."

His partner, engineer Aileen Boulanger, adds, "Sometimes it's easier to throw things away, but it's worth a little extra effort."

On the other hand, some merchants and restaurant owners like Émile Dossé consider that "finding alternatives is not easy."

Canadian Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault said in November, "The scientific data is clear: plastic pollution is widespread everywhere and causes harm to wildlife and the environment."

Ottawa authorities indicate that Canadians throw away about three million tons of plastic waste annually, only 9% of which is recycled, meaning that the majority is dumped in landfills and about 29 thousand tons of plastic materials pollute nature.
