Ahmad Abul Gheit, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, received on Wednesday both Antonio Tajani, the Foreign Minister of Italy, and Gabrielius Landsbergis, the Foreign Minister of Lithuania, during their visits to Cairo.
Jamal Rushdi, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated that the meetings focused on the ongoing escalation in the Gaza Strip, where the Secretary-General emphasized the need to end the ongoing war as soon as possible to prevent matters from escalating into more dangerous situations and spiraling out of control, stressing that retaliating against the residents of Gaza and employing a policy of collective punishment is contrary to international law and will not achieve the desired security.
During the meetings, Abul Gheit expressed his complete rejection of the killing of civilians, emphasizing the importance of providing protection for the Palestinians and the necessity of addressing the root causes that led to the explosive situation in such a dangerous and tragic manner, chief among them the deadlock in the political horizon and the ongoing erosion of the foundations for a two-state solution.
