A spokesperson for the Canadian Palestinian family reported missing in the Gaza Strip said he had contacted his loved ones.

Zuheir Summer continued that Mansour Shoman was documenting the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian sector amidst the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas when he lost contact with his mother, wife, and colleagues in Abu Dhabi and Canada on January 21.

Canadian Global Affairs confirmed after a few days that it was aware of a Canadian missing in Gaza.

Summer, located in Toronto, added that Shoman contacted his family and the team supporting his work on Monday and is in good condition, and he has since posted a video of himself online, saying he was in the city of Khan Yunis in the south of the Gaza Strip after surviving several rounds of war-related fighting.

In the same context, Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said she had seen the good news about Shoman's survival and hoped to speak with his mother soon.

In the video posted online, Shoman appears saying he left his phone behind while heading to check on a project with others and then fell into a series of attacks, during which he sought refuge in several locations; he is now returning to the hospital complex in Khan Yunis.

He said in the video: "Over the past two weeks, we have been moving from house to house throughout West Khan Yunis, never leaving Khan Yunis, and never thinking of leaving Khan Yunis."

Shoman had previously worked in oil and gas consulting in Calgary, and he is a father of five children who left Gaza with his wife late last year.

Attention was drawn to the videos and messages he posts on his social media platforms, which document the war that started on October 7.

In Toronto, Summer, a member of the team supporting Shoman, said his loved ones feel relieved to hear from him, adding, “We feel somewhat relieved, and we are happy that he made contact, but we still worry about his safety and what will happen next, and there are many decisions to be made between his mother, wife, and him, so we just want to respect that.”
