Luxury fashion house Balenciaga has filed a lawsuit against the production company behind its Spring 2023 campaign after the Supreme Court ruling identified child pornography in some images.
The brand, which is already facing condemnation for an inappropriate campaign that included children, filed the lawsuit on Friday in New York State Supreme Court, where Balenciaga is seeking damages of no less than $25 million from the production company North Six, designer Nicolas de Jardins, and his company des jardins.
Balenciaga had hired the two companies to develop and produce its Spring 2023 campaign, according to the court summons, stating that the campaign, which involved actress Nicole Kidman and model Bella Hadid, among others, aimed to simulate the company's environment, with shots arranged in a "Manhattan office."
As the investigation continues, Balenciaga said it takes responsibility for its lack of supervision and control over the campaign images, and it has apologized after its promotional campaign sparked widespread controversy in the fashion world, where children appeared wearing accessories in a way that suggested sexual connotations and promoted the idea of child enslavement.
Later, Balenciaga issued an apology on its Instagram page explaining that it deleted all images from the Spring Summer 2023 collection.
The company said in its statement: "We strongly condemn the abuse of children; it was never our intention to include it in our presentation. Plush bear bags and the gift collection should not be displayed with children. This was a poor choice by Balenciaga, as well as our failure to evaluate and verify the images; the responsibility lies solely with the company."
Kim Kardashian, who was an ambassador for the fashion brand, addressed the campaign on Sunday after receiving a flood of messages from fans and commentators urging her to denounce the brand, saying she is "re-evaluating" her relationship with the luxury fashion house.
