The judge of Regina decided that a former doctor accused of multiple sexual assaults is not guilty after a lengthy trial.

"Sylvester Okabam," a gastroenterologist who practiced in Regina before relinquishing his medical license in 2018, pleaded not guilty to seven counts of sexual assault brought against him by five former patients.

Judge "Brian Sherman" said it was a difficult decision, but ultimately found "Okabam" not guilty on all charges against him.

The five complainants stood at trial; four said Okabam inserted his finger into their vagina during medical procedures, and one said he touched her breasts during an examination.

Sherman said it was about reliability, not credibility, and added that the decision does not conclude that the complainants are not reliable witnesses, meaning they sincerely believe what they testified to.

Some reasons given to question their reliability include anesthesia at the time of the assaults, contradictions in testimonies during the trial, and changing events.

The judge made the final decision that the doctor is not guilty due to unclear evidence, conflicting statements, and inconsistency with the allegations against the doctor, thereby acquitting him.

Lawyer "Aaron Fox" said that Okabam does not intend to return to medical practice after everything that has happened to him.
