One of the fireworks displays on Canada Day in Toronto was canceled, and another was postponed after a contractor withdrew from the event at the last minute.

According to the city, the vendor providing fireworks for Ashbridges Bay Park and Stan Wadlow Park and Milliken Park informed officials on Thursday that they "do not intend to fulfill their commitments to perform fireworks displays."

Staff said in a press release issued Friday morning, "City staff worked all day and into the night to secure new contractors who can perform fireworks at the three sites. Companies across Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, and the United States were contacted".

The city was able to secure the services of a new contractor to allow the fireworks display to continue at Ashbridges Bay this evening. The contractor was also able to commit to a fireworks display on July 2 for Stan Wadlow Park."

However, officials said the potential contractor for Milliken Park in Scarborough, located near Steeles Avenue and Middlefield Road, confirmed Friday morning that they do not have the resources for this event. The fireworks there have been canceled for now.

Toronto Mayor John Tory said at a press conference before Canada Day: "They just pulled out of the contract we made with them." "City task forces have tried to contact 20 different vendors."

City officials said they dealt with the contractor, David Whysall International Fireworks Inc , several times, including on Victoria Day weekend. They were in contact with the company recently on June 20 to confirm details of the Canada Day fireworks event.

Spokesperson Brad Ross said, "We will definitely hold this vendor responsible for any costs and damages the city may already incur as a result of last-minute notice that they will not fulfill their commitments"

Fireworks will continue at Ashbridges Bay Park and Mel Lastman Square and Downsview Park as scheduled tonight at 10 p.m..

Ross said: "We apologize to residents for some of these cancellations and rescheduling, but we hope people can enjoy the Canada Day weekend, and certainly tonight at Ashbridge Bay and Mel Lastman's Square".

Ross said he did not see the fireworks planned for Friday night but still hopes it will be a great show.

The city also reminded residents that fireworks are permitted on private property without a permit until 11 p.m. on Canada Day; however, they are not allowed to be set off in city parks, beaches, porches, or parking lots.

Tory urged residents heading to the city to watch fireworks to do so respectfully, referring to last Victoria Day weekend when two people were shot, one person was stabbed, two others were robbed at gunpoint, and seven police officers were injured after being hit by multiple fireworks.

He said: "It was a very small group of people, you know, really troublemakers, on Victoria Day weekend." "Their behavior was extremely reckless; this riot could literally have led to someone's death because they were shooting fireworks at each other and the police officers, and there is no excuse for that."

He added, "This is not the behavior we hope for in the City of Toronto."
