The theft occurred on the same day the shopping center reopened after a three-week closure due to the truck convoy protest.
A man is facing charges related to an attempted armed robbery at Rideau Centre.
Around 12:15 p.m., the Ottawa Police Service received several calls reporting an armed man inside the mall on Tuesday, February 22.
Police say the suspect stole from a business in the mall, and when confronted by an officer, he drew a firearm and fled on foot. The suspect was caught after a short distance and taken into custody.
No injuries were reported, but the mall was evacuated, and there was a significant police presence in the area throughout the afternoon.
The incident also occurred on the same day the shopping center reopened after a three-week closure due to the so-called "Freedom Convoy" protest.
Carlos Smith, 50, of Ottawa, is charged with theft and several firearm-related offenses.
OPS says there are no further safety concerns, and the investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Theft Unit at 613-236-5116 ext. 1222 or call Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 or at www.crimestoppers.ca.
