Many people in the Waterloo area are responding to the US Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and what that might mean for Canada.

On Friday, the Supreme Court overturned the constitutional protection of abortion for women in the United States.

The court's overturning of the historic ruling is likely to lead to a ban on abortion in nearly half the states.

"T.K. Pritchard" is the executive director of the SHORE Centre, formerly known as Family Planning in the Waterloo region.

Pritchard said, "Definitely a really tough day for me and the team and everyone in the abortion rights field and anyone who might seek an abortion in their life."

Pritchard adds that the ruling means nothing for Canada, but it may change the conversation, encourage anti-choice activism, and lead to attempts to restrict abortion rights in the country.

Josie Loutky, Youth Coordinator at the Campaign Life Coalition, said: "It’s a bigger issue than just talking about it." "I think we need to rethink our position.

Pritchard says the ruling may also cause people from the United States to come to Canada to seek treatment.

Pritchard said, "It’s really hard at this stage to determine how many people will actually cross the border to seek abortions."

Pritchard adds that access to Michigan is likely to be restricted, which may lead some people to come to Ontario.
