It has been a devastating month for the Jergour family from Laval, Quebec. Last Friday, it became worse, and the family's vacation in Cuba turned into an endless nightmare after the body of one of their loved ones did not return with the rest of the family.
Instead, another person was sent in his place, and they are now seeking answers as well as their father.
Faraj Jergour passed away on March 22 in Varadero, Cuba, and when they went to identify the body of the 68-year-old man and father of two, it was a Russian man about 20 years younger in the coffin with tattoos and a full head of hair.
Miriam Jergour, Faraj's daughter, said, "That was not my father's body." "It was someone else who does not resemble my father."
His son Karimm Jergour said, "I'm in shock." "Like, I cried."
Faraj suffered a heart attack at sea on the second day of their family vacation. With no doctor at the hotel they were staying at, the family waited hours for emergency services to arrive and take his body.
They then contacted the Canadian consulate and were told it was closed for the weekend and could come on Monday.
The consulate also said that the family must pay $10,000 to return Jergour's body to Canada.
They raised the money together and waited three weeks. Now, they have his passport and death certificate but have no idea where his body is.
Karimm said, "It's a body. "It's a human being, not an animal or something like that."
The family tried to contact the Canadian government several times, and when they finally reached someone, Miriam said the employee stated it was not their responsibility. She said the responsibility of delivering the body lies with the Assistor company, a Cuban medical insurance company.
However, Miriam said she had not been in contact with the company at all.
She said, "We Canadians are not protected in Cuba."
The Urgel Bourgie Funeral Home in Montreal told CTV News that it is in contact with the Cuban company and searching for the proper body.
Global Affairs Canada stated in media comments that it is looking into the file, and the entire ordeal has been an emotional and physical drain on the family.
