Twenty-six EU member states called for an "immediate humanitarian ceasefire that would lead to a sustainable ceasefire" in the Gaza Strip, according to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell in Brussels on Monday.

At a meeting of EU foreign ministers, all bloc countries except Hungary warned Israel against launching an attack on the city of Rafah in southern Gaza, noting that this would deepen the disaster for about 1.5 million refugees crowded in the city.

Irish Foreign Minister Michael Martin said before the meeting: "An attack on Rafah would be utterly catastrophic... It would be unreasonable."
