Many couples spend several years trying to conceive, but there is no written evidence on how to succeed in pregnancy.

Statistics have shown that infertility is an obstacle for one in every six couples. Infertility does not discriminate between individuals regardless of age, race, or cultural backgrounds. Many couples do not understand the reasons that affect fertility.

These are the most common misconceptions doctors hear during patient examinations:

1. He has no fertility problems, as he has already become a father: Contrary to popular belief, male fertility is limited. Similar to female fertility, male fertility decreases with age, especially after the age of forty.

2. All the women in my family had children in their forties, so I am fine: Although family fertility history is considered during infertility treatment, it cannot help or limit fertility possibilities. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 11 percent of couples suffer from secondary infertility, which is known among couples who have their first child, and then cannot conceive again after a year. It is worth noting that after a woman reaches the age of forty, her chance of pregnancy decreases to 5 percent per month compared to 20 percent chance for a woman at the age of thirty.

3. I smoke, but it’s not necessary to quit smoking before pregnancy:

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine estimates that about 13 percent of infertility diagnoses in women are due to smoking. Believe it or not, smoking at least five cigarettes daily is associated with decreased fertility rates in both men and women.

4. Having sex more than 24 hours after ovulation: Pregnancy becomes impossible after the ovulation period ends. Ovulation occurs when an egg drops from the ovary into the fallopian tube once a month, that is, after seven to ten days from the menstrual cycle date.

5. I will not worry about the quantity of my eggs before reaching forty: A woman is born with 7 million eggs, which decreases to 400,000 at the onset of puberty. During a woman’s life, between 400 and 500 eggs are released. It is worth noting that the number of eggs decreases rapidly after the age of 35.

6. Practicing yoga and exercise: Body and mind health can increase fertility, but cannot reduce the age of the ovaries or semen. Age is considered crucial and linked to fertility in both men and women.

7. I don’t want to lose weight: Excess weight is a problem affecting both men and women, as hormonal changes occur in the body that affect sperm production and ovulation. Estimates indicate that 70 percent of infertile women are those who suffer from excess weight.

8. Only women need to take medication before pregnancy: It has long been known that women should take folic acid to prevent some birth defects, but it is now also known that folic acid is an important supplement related to male fertility.

9. Sexually transmitted diseases affect my health but do not affect trying to have children: Sexually transmitted diseases affect the ability to have children. They can lead to a cycle of pelvic inflammatory disease, which causes infertility problems.

10. Coffee consumption does not affect fertility: One study found that women who consume more than one cup of coffee per day are half as likely to conceive compared to women who consume less coffee.

11. Having sex daily to increase chances of pregnancy: Having sex daily only slightly increases the chances of pregnancy.
