He said that Ukraine's efforts to repel Russian forces from Mariupol face great difficulties.
On the other hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in a speech before the UN Security Council on Tuesday, demanded "holding" Russia accountable for "war crimes," calling for its expulsion from the UN body. Zelensky said while describing the alleged atrocities in Bucha, "People killed in their apartments and homes... and civilians crushed by tanks while sitting in their cars in the middle of the road, just for pleasure."
The United States also announced that it will prevent, in coordination with the Group of Seven and the European Union, "all new investments" in Russia starting Wednesday, as part of a new sanctions package, according to a knowledgeable source.
These punitive measures imposed in response to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine will also include "enhanced sanctions against financial institutions and public companies in Russia and sanctions against Russian government officials and their relatives," the source told Agence France-Presse.
During a speech yesterday, Tuesday, before the UN Security Council, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky demanded "accountability" for Russia's commission of "war crimes" during its war on his country.
Zelensky said while describing the alleged atrocities in Bucha, "People killed in their apartments and homes... civilians crushed by tanks while sitting in their cars in the middle of the road, just for pleasure," adding, "Accountability must be inevitable." He pointed out that "hundreds of thousands" of Ukrainians were deported to Russia.
Zelensky explained in the presence of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, "Either you exclude Russia as an aggressor country and initiator of the war so that it does not obstruct decisions related to its aggression. Then we do our utmost to achieve peace, or show that we can implement reform or change (...) If there is no alternative or choice, the next option will be to dissolve yourselves."
On the other hand, an official announced Tuesday that the European Union is heading towards imposing sanctions on Russia affecting oil and coal due to its war in Ukraine, although some countries still fear possible economic repercussions from this.
The European Union and the United States are currently considering more sanctions against Russia following reports accusing Russian forces of war crimes after dozens of bodies were found in areas previously controlled by its forces near Kyiv.
