The management of the instant messaging application "WhatsApp" announced that its security team has finally discovered malware hidden inside an application called "Hey WhatsApp".
WhatsApp's head, Will Cathcart, pointed out that this application was designed by an entity calling itself "HeyMods", and it deceives users into thinking they will get unprecedented features in the app as soon as they download the "Hey WhatsApp" program, only to later reveal that it is just a "malicious trick" aimed at stealing information stored on WhatsApp users' phones.
Hisham Mohammed, a technology expert, told "Sky News Arabia" that the victims of this app are only users of phones operating on the "Android" system, as "Hey WhatsApp" was available for download outside the "Google Play" store, away from the oversight provided by "Google" in its store, urging users to remove it immediately without any hesitation.
Mohammed pointed out that the WhatsApp application management usually ignores addressing this type of applications, but the great risks carried by "Hey WhatsApp" prompted the head of the app to intervene personally and warn about its dangers and emphasize the necessity of using the original version of WhatsApp available on "Google Play" and "App Store".
According to Mohammed, the WhatsApp app was designed according to the highest security standards, which means it is difficult to hack, so hackers exploited the vulnerabilities present in WhatsApp users by creating applications that can be integrated with an app on "Android", claiming they grant unprecedented features, only to later reveal the falsehood of these promises.
Social media expert Joe Khoury stressed in a talk with "Sky News Arabia" the necessity for WhatsApp users to have the necessary awareness and not fall victim to the "greed" of obtaining fabricated features such as the ability to see who are the people watching them on WhatsApp, and other features, where hackers exploit users' "curiosity" to steal information stored on their phones.
Khoury saw that the original version of the WhatsApp app alone is capable of providing the highest level of protection for users, while calling on the WhatsApp application management to speed up the process of offering new features sought by users to limit their resorting to fake apps aimed at stealing users' data and information.
