The U.S. Security Council announced that after a "very detailed" forensic analysis, it was unable to reach a conclusive result regarding the origin of the bullet that killed Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.
The U.S. government issued a statement on the assassination of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh stating, "After a very detailed forensic analysis, independent third-party examiners, as part of a process supervised by the U.S. Security Coordinator (USSC), were unable to reach a conclusive result regarding the origin of the bullet that killed Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh."
Noting, "Weapons experts decided that the bullet was severely damaged, preventing a clear conclusion."
Explaining, "In addition to forensic and ballistic analysis, the U.S. Security Council was granted full access to investigations by both the Israeli Defense Forces and the Palestinian Authority over the past several weeks."
The U.S. government said in the statement, "By summarizing both investigations, the U.S. Security Council concluded that fire from Israeli military positions was most likely responsible for the death of Shireen Abu Akleh."
Noting, "But the U.S. Security Council found no reason to believe this was intentional; it was the result of tragic circumstances during an Israeli military-led operation against Palestinian Islamic Jihad factions on May 11, 2022, in Jenin, which followed a series of terrorist attacks in Israel."
The statement ended by saying, "The United States appreciates this and continues to encourage cooperation between Israel and the Palestinian Authority in this important case."
The U.S. government said, "We will remain engaged with Israel and the Palestinian Authority in the next steps and urge accountability."
Once again, we extend our deepest condolences to the Abu Akleh family.
