Today, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau signed a new security agreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, coinciding with the arrival of country leaders to the Ukrainian capital Kyiv as an expression of their solidarity with Ukraine after two years since the Russian forces launched a large-scale invasion of its territory, which is still ongoing.

The agreement, announced by Trudeau during a surprise visit to Kyiv, aims to strengthen both the Ukrainian army and the struggling Ukrainian economy.

The agreement includes about $320 million in new military spending, due by the end of this year, and $2.4 billion in loans to Ukraine managed through the International Monetary Fund.

"War does not only happen on the battlefield; people live it every day," Trudeau said about the loans at a press conference at the official residence of the Ukrainian president.

"This money allows for the repair of roads after bombings, pays (wages) to nurses and doctors who keep people healthy, and supports Ukrainians as they face Russia," Trudeau added on his third visit to Ukraine since the start of the Russian military invasion on February 24, 2022.

Trudeau also announced $75 million to help fund Ukraine’s efforts in mine clearance and intelligence gathering.

He also promised to provide $15 million to help complete work on the National Museum of the “Holodomor” genocide in Kyiv.

Accompanying Trudeau on his surprise visit to Ukraine are Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland, Minister of National Defense Bill Blair, and Chief of the Defence Staff of the Canadian Armed Forces, General Wayne Eyre.

Trudeau is spending his day in the Ukrainian capital alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo. Absent countries, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Poland, expressed their support for Ukraine in public statements on social media platforms.

"There will also be continued support, over several years, because we are here for the long term to help Ukraine achieve a decisive victory against (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s unjustified invasion," Trudeau said in a prepared statement.
