The newly appointed Toronto councillor resigned after her old social media posts, which appear to show anti-LGBTQ content, were revealed just hours after her appointment.

Rosemary Bryne was appointed by the city council as the new councillor for Ward 1 - Etobicoke North during a special meeting on Friday, to fill the vacant position left by Michael Ford, who ran and won the municipal election in June.

After her appointment, Bryne's previous social media activities were revealed, which appear to show her sharing anti-LGBTQ content.

Friday marked the start of the Pride Toronto Festival weekend, after a two-year hiatus.

Many council members posted on social media that had they known about Bryne's posts, they would not have voted for her.

Among the 23 council members who voted, 21 voted in favor of Bryne, including Mayor John Tory.

Josh Matlow, one of the councillors who did not vote for Bryne, called for her resignation, tweeting that he does not believe "anyone who supports hate and bigotry should be a member of Toronto City Council, or hold any public office."

On Friday night, Bryne issued a statement announcing that she would resign, saying it was the best way to continue serving those who love and support her in Etobicoke North.

Bryne said she is mentally devastated because her previous online posts "are being exploited." "I realize that council members were not aware of these posts before today's discussion, and now that they are, I understand that many would not have voted for me."

Tory said while Bryne made a "strong case" to the council for her appointment, her past social media posts are "unacceptable."

Tory said: "I do not fully agree with any anti-gay or anti-trans views.

I fully support 2SLGBTQ+ residents. City council members are expected to be role models when it comes to consistency with our shared values."

"I would not have voted for this appointment if I were aware of this and I know that is the feeling of the vast majority of council members who voted today as well."

He said it was appropriate for Bryne to resign and this is especially unfortunate on a weekend when we celebrate the progress we have made together," adding that he has asked staff to review the comprehensive appointment process.
