The Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Unit of the Ottawa Police charged former Canadian Senator Don Meredith on Saturday with three counts following an investigation into sexual assault allegations reported by a woman whom the police said was an adult at the time, dating back to 2013 and 2014. The police also stated in a statement that Meredith was charged with three counts of sexual assault and one count of harassment but was released on Saturday after pledging to appear in court. Meredith was appointed to the Senate by former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, serving from December 2010 until his resignation in May 2017. His departure followed a recommendation by the Senate Ethics Committee to expel him from the Red Chamber due to his involvement with a teenage girl at the time. Treasury Board officials confirmed that Meredith was eligible to receive his parliamentary pension since he resigned before facing a vote for expulsion. Later, in 2020, the Senate paid $498,000 in compensation to nine of Meredith's former staff members who reported experiencing harassment, including sexual harassment, while working.
