Kelowna Crossing Workers Negotiations Resume Ahead of Planned Strike

Unionized transit workers in Kelowna say they have been invited to resume negotiations with the employer on Tuesday, one day before the planned strike begins.

Members of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1722 have refused to work overtime for several weeks as part of ongoing labor actions aimed at forcing BC Transit contractor, First Transit Canada, to fix what the union calls a "broken transit system" in Kelowna.

According to the ATU, the overtime ban has resulted in a 20 to 30 percent reduction in transit service in the Central Okanagan area, which the union says is "a direct result of severe understaffing and underfunding in the transit system."

Earlier this week, the union announced its plan to escalate to a full work stoppage on Wednesday, October 5.

On Friday, it issued a brief statement saying that the strike threat prompted First Transit to request a one-day negotiation on Tuesday, October 4.

The statement read, "While the union does not expect any change from the company's latest offer, we will meet with them in hopes of reaching an agreement without having to proceed with the strike."

CTV News reached out to First Transit for comment on the situation. The story will be updated if a response is received.
