The Nigerien Ministry of Foreign Affairs, affiliated with the military council in Niger, announced that the country's authorities have revoked the diplomatic immunity of the French ambassador in Niamey, following the expiration of the 48-hour deadline granted to him to leave Niger.

According to a statement signed by the Nigerien Foreign Ministry, the French ambassador "no longer enjoys diplomatic immunity, and his diplomatic card and the visas granted to him and his family members have been revoked."

The same source added that instructions have been issued to the Nigerien police to begin the process of his expulsion.

The military council in Niger threatened days ago to use force if the French ambassador did not leave the country immediately.

After the ousting of Bongo, Gabon awaits the step of the military council.
The spokesman of the council addressed the ambassador: "Who are you to refuse to leave?" adding, "Our people must be prepared not to sleep in the coming days."

Thousands of demonstrators gathered yesterday, Sunday, in front of the largest French military base in Niger, on the outskirts of the capital Niamey, chanting slogans against the French presence.

French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Monday that the French ambassador to Niger will remain there despite pressure from the leaders of the recent coup in the country.

Macron mentioned, during a speech before diplomats:

France and its diplomats have faced particularly difficult situations in some countries over the past months.
I salute the French ambassador working in Niger who is still in that country.
Diplomacy is a path of commitment, and sometimes this path is fraught with danger.
We will continue to support President Mohamed Bazoum.
