India said on Sunday that its relations with Canada are going through a difficult phase and that Canadian diplomats "are constantly interfering" in India's internal affairs.

The Indian government is also furious that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged last month that Indian agents may have been involved in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a separatist Sikh leader in British Columbia in June. India has completely denied Canada's allegations.

Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, in his speech during the ceremony, said: "Relations are going through a difficult period at the moment. But I want to say that our problem lies with a certain slice of Canadian politics and the policies that emerge from it."

Canada was forced on Thursday to recall 41 of its diplomats from India due to India's unilateral decision to revoke diplomatic immunity for Canadian diplomats.

Trudeau said on Friday that India is causing hardships for millions of people in both countries by issuing an order to expel diplomats.

Jaishankar stated that India has sought diplomatic parity under the Vienna Convention, as we had concerns about the ongoing interference in our affairs by Canadian diplomats.

In a video posted by ANI news agency, Jaishankar said: "We have not made much of this matter public. I understand that after a while, more things will come to light, and people will understand why such a problem exists with many of them."

Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said last week that India's decision regarding the diplomats is unreasonable and violates the Vienna Convention on diplomatic rules.

Jaishankar also mentioned: "We stopped issuing visas to Canada a few weeks ago because it was not safe for our diplomats to work there," and added that if India sees progress in the security of its diplomats working there, it will resume visa issuance.
