The European Union has decided to implement the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) starting in 2024, which requires tourists to obtain prior approval before traveling, including American citizens.
ETIAS represents a direct process for submitting applications online and receiving approval via email. Travelers will need to fill out a form that includes basic applicant data, a curriculum vitae, travel plans, and security questions.
Although most applicants will receive approval within an hour, some may face a waiting period of up to 96 hours for further checks.
The application fee is approximately $8 for travelers of all ages, and once approval is received, the travel authorization will be valid for multiple entries over a period of 3 years or until the passport expires.
Despite the new procedures, the duration of stay allowed for American tourists in Europe will not change, as holders of American passports are permitted to stay for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa. A special visa is required for stays exceeding 90 days.
Additionally, obtaining a license from the European Travel Information and Authorization System will be required for travel to all EU countries, including Schengen Area members like Spain, France, and Italy, as well as members of the European Free Trade Association, such as Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland, future Schengen Area members like Bulgaria and Cyprus, and small European countries like Andorra and Monaco.
