The government of the Republic of Congo has denied rumors that circulated on social media about a military coup taking place in the central African nation.

The government spokesman Thierry Mongala stated in a post on the social media platform "X", referring to the Congolese capital, "False information indicated the possibility of serious events happening in Brazzaville," according to Bloomberg News.

The spokesman added that "the government denies these false news stories."

Speculation about a military coup emerged on social media yesterday, Sunday, as Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso left the capital Brazzaville, heading to New York to attend United Nations General Assembly meetings this week.

Investor concerns regarding political discontent in Congo led to the selling of dollar bonds in the country following the military coup in neighboring Gabon last month, with the yield on Congolese debt due in 2029 rising by about 600 basis points this month to reach 13.30%.

Sassou Nguesso, 79 years old, has ruled Congo for nearly 4 decades, leading the country from 1979 to 1992, then returning to power at the end of a civil war in 1997, and winning a fourth 5-year term as president in the elections held two years ago.
