Today, Monday, the Sudanese Canadian Community Association (SCCA) in London, Ontario, organized a “Day for Sudan”. This event coincides with Family Day in this Canadian province, which is an official holiday.

According to Doha Abdel Hamid, a member of this association, the “goal of organizing this day is to introduce and raise awareness about the ongoing war in Sudan.”

In mid-April 2023, the spark of war ignited between the Sudanese army led by Lieutenant General Abdul Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces affiliated with Lieutenant General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, nicknamed “Hemetti,” the former second man in the military authority.

This war resulted in thousands of deaths, including between 10,000 and 15,000 dead in one town in Darfur (west), according to United Nations experts in a statement issued last January.

The young woman said that the invitation is directed to everyone, Sudanese and others, in the London area.

She added that the association’s activities did not start with the outbreak of the war; they “existed before the war” as it had previously “raised awareness by publishing videos of violations against the honor of [Sudanese] women, killing, theft, and looting.”

Regarding the program prepared for the day, Doha Abdel Hamid mentioned that the organizing team preferred to prepare videos about what is happening now in Sudan and about the capabilities of this city to attract the attendees’ attention.

“If we talk about history and war, people may not be interested,” she added.

The organizers did not forget the children by raising “awareness among them through play.” As for the youth, they will have the opportunity to learn about the latest events through videos specially made for them as well.

The event includes a market for selling products from members of the Sudanese community in London, Ontario. A portion of the sales proceeds was dedicated to helping those in need in Sudan.

This charitable aspect was organized in cooperation with the “Sadagaat Canada” Foundation, which was established in 2002 in the United States and obtained the status of a “charitable association” from the Canadian Revenue Agency in April 2022.
