The Spanish police announced in a statement on Friday the arrest of 14 workers at one of the main airports for tourists on suspicion of stealing items from checked luggage.
The statement mentioned that the police confiscated stolen items estimated to be worth about two million euros (2.2 million dollars) from a group of employees at the largest airport in Tenerife in the Spanish Canary Islands.
South Tenerife Airport handles about 11 million passengers annually, most of them European tourists seeking the mild climate of the islands located off the northwest coast of Africa.
The police statement said that the investigation began after increasing complaints from travelers about missing items from their luggage.
The security forces stated that the thefts occurred during the loading of luggage into the airplane’s hold, where the alleged thieves forcibly opened bags, took valuable items, and then closed them again.
It also pointed out in its statement that the authorities seized 29 luxury watches, 120 pieces of jewelry, 22 mobile phones, and various electronic devices.
The police believe that the suspects may have sold many other items online or to local stores.
