Data from South Korea showed today, Thursday, that cancer and heart diseases were the main causes of death in 2022.
The South Korean Yonhap news agency reported that the total number of deaths last year reached 372,939, an increase of 17.4% compared to 2021, according to the Korean Statistical Office. This is the highest number of deaths recorded since data collection began in 1983.
The agency stated that there were 727.6 deaths per 100,000 Koreans last year.
The data showed that cancer was the leading cause of death, claiming 83,378 lives, or 22.4%, followed by heart diseases, which accounted for 33,715 lives, or 9%.
On the other hand, suicide was the sixth leading cause of death in South Korea in 2022. A total of 12,906 people committed suicide last year, a decrease of 3.3% compared to 2021.
