While Canadians feel the pain of rising inflation, some products have actually become cheaper in recent months.

According to data from Statistics Canada, the price of whole chicken has dropped by 13 percent since December 2021.

Pork cuts have seen a similar decrease. Sylvain Charlebois, director of the Agri-food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University, said in an interview with CTV's Your Morning program.

Tomato prices dropped by 26 percent, while canned salmon decreased by 4 percent. According to Charlebois, other products that have started to see price declines include tofu, bananas, and peanut butter.

For these products, Charlebois said farm commodity prices have started to fall. "Prices (of commodities) have actually dropped in recent months, which is already easing pressure across the supply chain."

According to Statistics Canada last week, the annual inflation rate in this country reached 8.1 percent in June 2022, its highest rate in nearly 40 years. The food price inflation rate also remained high at 8.8 percent, but the data shows that food prices have begun to stabilize.

As market conditions become more favorable and predictable, Charlebois said grocery stores have now started offering better sales and discounts. "If you noticed in recent years, there are fewer losses, fewer discounts, and fewer promotions.

Why? Because it was difficult for companies to plan for the future.

Across the country, gasoline prices fell last weekend to their lowest levels since April.

Charlebois said, "Just a few weeks ago, we were paying much more for fuel than we are now. And that has an effect on overall food prices, especially products that have to come from distant places."
