A conservative Nova Scotia Senator was seen on video mocking the reaction of people living in Ottawa to the recent protests, saying he was tired of their entitlements and "six-figure salaries and a 20-hour work week."
In the video recorded near the Parliament building, Senator Michael MacDonald expressed his support for the protesters who have occupied Ottawa for more than three weeks.
He said, "They are a segment of Canadians who said we are tired of bullying, hypocrisy, and lies."
MacDonald said the video was recorded on Wednesday evening when he was returning from dinner and drinking wine. He asked the person holding the camera not to record.
He said, "I felt ashamed."
He will issue an apology in the Senate on Monday.
He added, "I am going upstairs to take my medicine. I have always been a responsible member of the Senate. I have let many people down."
In the video, MacDonald said he wants the protesters to leave Windsor, Ottawa, and other places where they are disrupting transportation, "but in Ottawa, I do not want them to leave."
The MP mocked the reaction of Ottawa residents to the protests, saying, "Oh, I hear this all the time - 'They are in our city' - it’s a city for everyone."
"This is the capital of the country. It is not your city just because you get a six-figure salary and work 20 hours a week."
Among those receiving six-figure salaries in Ottawa are Senators like MacDonald, who receive a base salary of $160,000 per year and can work until age 75.
The video appeared to have been recorded by someone sympathetic to the protests.
MacDonald thanked the person recording for the "courage and decency" to come to Ottawa.
MacDonald also described his wife as a "Karen."
"Karen" is a sarcastic term often used online to describe someone who complains about vaccines and mask mandates.
In fact, Senator MacDonald's wife is named Marilyn, according to his Senate biography.
He added, "I am really tired of the entitlements of this country and this city," their nonsense, and described them as bigots, racists, and everything else. This is very unfair."
In October, MacDonald became the first member of the Conservative caucus to call for a review of former leader Erin O'Toole's leadership.
He will also vote in the Senate on Liberal government legislation based on the Emergency Act in response to protests in Ottawa and elsewhere, if passed through the House of Commons.
MacDonald spent most of his career working in regional and federal policies and served as Deputy Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada until he was appointed to the Senate in 2009 on the advice of then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
Wow ? Conservative Senator Michael MacDonald caught giving a two minute rant in support of the illegal occupation.
