Moscow launched a massive barrage of missiles and drones on western Ukraine on Sunday night, following its promise to respond to a Ukrainian attack on a Russian tanker.
Officials reported that the Russian and Ukrainian shelling across the country resulted in at least six deaths overnight.

Separately, the second largest airport in Moscow briefly suspended flights early Sunday after thwarting a drone attack near the Russian capital.

The Ukrainian Air Force stated that Russia launched 70 attack drones and a missile, including cruise missiles from aircraft over the Caspian Sea and Iranian-made Shahed 136/131 drones.

Serhiy Tyurin, deputy head of the military administration of the Khmelnytskyi region in Ukraine, reported that three waves of missiles struck the Staro Konstantiniv area, damaging several buildings and igniting a fire in a warehouse. Officials indicated that the strike might have been aimed at the city's airport.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that facilities of the Motor Sich aircraft engine manufacturer in the Zaporizhzhia region were also attacked.

The Russian barrage came in response to a Ukrainian drone attack on a Russian tanker in the Black Sea near the Crimean Peninsula late Friday. Ukraine also struck a major Russian port with drones earlier that same day.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova condemned what she described as a "terrorist attack" by Ukraine on a civilian ship in the Kerch Strait, stating, "There can be no justification for such barbaric acts, and they will not go unanswered; their authors and perpetrators will surely be punished."

A Ukrainian security service official confirmed to the Associated Press that a Ukrainian drone loaded with 450 kilograms (992 pounds) of explosives struck the tanker that was delivering fuel to Russian forces. The official spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak publicly.

The Russian Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport reported on Telegram that although the drone caused a hole in the tanker’s engine room, there were no injuries among the crew of 11.

Two of the six fatalities on Sunday night occurred during a Russian airstrike in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine, according to the local military administration head, Oleksiy Syniehubov. Four other individuals were injured.

Zelensky stated that a guided bomb hit a blood transfusion center in the Kupiansk area late on August 5, writing on social media, "This war crime alone speaks volumes about Russian aggression, and defeating the terrorists is a matter of honor for anyone who values life."

The intense shelling continued along the front line in eastern Ukraine as Kyiv presses forward with its ongoing counter-offensive. Elsewhere in the Kharkiv region, a 58-year-old woman was killed, and a 66-year-old man was hospitalized following Russian shelling of the village of Podoly, an official reported. In the Kupiansk area of eastern Ukraine, Russian missiles struck a 55-year-old man and ignited a fire in a forest, officials reported on social media. Russian attacks in the villages of Torsk and New-York in the Donetsk region resulted in two deaths, as reported by local governor Pavlo Kyrylenko on social media.

Ukrainian shelling in Russian-controlled Donetsk resulted in the death of an elderly woman in her eighties, according to the Moscow-appointed mayor Alexei Kalymzin on Sunday. The shelling also ignited a fire in the main building of the university, according to the head of the illegally annexed region, Denis Pushilin.

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that the fire caused the roof of the building to collapse, but there were no injuries.

Vnukovo Airport in Moscow, located 15 kilometers southwest of the Russian capital, briefly suspended flights on Sunday morning after a drone was shot down in the airspace around the city. This attack was one of four strikes on the Russian capital within a month, highlighting Moscow's vulnerability as Russia's war in Ukraine enters its second year.

The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that the drone was destroyed by air defense systems in the Podolsk area of Moscow’s suburbs.

They added that no one was injured in the failed drone attack, although Russian media later reported that a 77-year-old man was injured by shrapnel in his hand. These reports could not be independently verified.

Ukrainian authorities, who generally avoid commenting on attacks on Russian territory, did not specify whether they carried out the raid.

The last time flights were suspended at the airport was on July 30 when two drones crashed in the commercial district of Moscow after being confused by Russian air defenses.
