The Royal Canadian Mounted Police reported the death of a helicopter pilot who succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash of his aircraft on Wednesday evening while combating a forest fire in northern Alberta in western Canada.
According to a spokesperson for the Canadian Transportation Safety Board, the 41-year-old pilot was the only passenger on board the helicopter. The helicopter crashed in a swamp area near Haig Lake, in the Riviere la Paix region, north of Alberta, around six o'clock yesterday evening.
The pilot is identified as Chris Krippski from the city of Whitecourt, located approximately 200 kilometers northwest of Edmonton, the capital of Alberta.
The Transportation Safety Board mentioned that the pilot was involved in water transportation to extinguish fires.
Meanwhile, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrived at the helicopter crash site, which is inaccessible by land, around eight o'clock in the evening, at which time several forestry workers present were trying to provide first aid to the pilot.
The pilot was then transported to the nearby Peace River airport, where he was pronounced dead.
The Canadian Transportation Safety Board indicated that a team of investigators was dispatched urgently to the crash site to gather information.
The pilot from Alberta is the third person to lose their life due to forest fires this year in Canada. Last Saturday, a 25-year-old firefighter died while fighting forest fires in the Northwest Territories. In British Columbia, a young woman from the fire crew also died last week after a tree fell on her during a fire outbreak.
In a related context, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith expressed her condolences for the death of the helicopter pilot on social media, on behalf of all the province's residents, stating: "I extend my condolences to the family, friends, and everyone who knew him. This tragic death is a reminder that men and women risk their lives to keep us safe."
Alberta's Minister of Forests and Parks, Todd Lowen, also extended his condolences in a statement saying: "As we mourn the loss of a person while performing their duty, brave rescuers in Alberta continue to put their lives on the line every day to protect Alberta families."
For his part, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted expressing his sadness at the news of the pilot's death.
