First responders say it took nearly 12 hours to rescue more than 100 residents from a long-term care home that was submerged in water in Mississauga, Ontario, after heavy rain hit the Greater Toronto Area on Tuesday.

Dan Herd, captain of the Mississauga Fire Team, said the evacuation of Tyndall Seniors Village involved pumping thousands of liters of water that overflowed from nearby Etobicoke Creek into the first floor and parking lot, where rescue teams used boats to transport residents to safety.

Herd added that residents who were unable to walk were carried down the stairs from the upper floors with the help of first responders and lifting equipment.

Tom Kukolich, acting deputy chief of paramedics for the Region of Peel, said 116 residents were moved to two long-term care homes and two hotels, and none of them required emergency treatment.

He emphasized that the evacuation process was challenging but was completed without any injuries, thanks to the collaboration of multiple emergency response teams, including medical paramedics from York and Toronto.

The storm on Tuesday caused chaos throughout Toronto and surrounding communities, with widespread flooding shutting down many main roads and stations and leaving thousands without power.
