The shortage of painkillers for children has led many parents to do their utmost to find ways to relieve their sick children's symptoms, especially with the flu season approaching. The Canadian Ministry of Health announced on Friday increased measures by manufacturers to address the shortage of supply of acetaminophen and ibuprofen products for children, which affected famous brands including Tylenol and Advil. Parents across the country also reported having to go to many pharmacies to find painkillers for their children, if they were lucky enough to find them at all. Pharmacist Dr. Nardin Nakhla stated that the shortage is due to a combination of panic buying and supply chain issues, adding: "Our latest estimates show us that the sharp increase in demand since August is about 200 to 300 percent higher than its highest historical levels." In July, the Ontario Pharmacists Association began reporting concerns about the shortage of children's painkillers as well as cough and cold medicines, noting that the shortage has worsened in recent weeks due to a variety of factors that caused a "perfect storm," including: the approaching flu season, high levels of viral activity, and the start of the school year. The Canadian Ministry of Health also strongly advised parents not to use expired medications, or give children under 12 prescriptions meant for adults, or purchase medications from third parties. Additionally, children with fever should be given plenty of fluids and use cold compresses or even take a warm bath.
