A senior government source told CTV News that some visa requirements will be reinstated for Mexican citizens visiting Canada.
The new federal government rules will take effect today, Thursday at 11:30 PM.
Last month, the Conservatives called on the government to reinstate the requirements amid growing concerns about the rejection of refugee applications.
Asylum applications from Mexico have increased in recent years, and the rate of Mexican applicants actually obtaining refugee status is much lower than that of other countries.
This is partly due to the government's 2016 decision to lift visa requirements, making it easier for people coming from Mexico to apply for asylum in Canada.
The Conservatives say the change has led to fraud, abuse, pressure on the asylum system, and delays in legitimate claims.
