A police oversight body in Quebec is investigating the death of a man who jumped into a river northeast of Montreal while fleeing from a police chase.
The Independent Police Office (BEI) said police divers found the body of the 27-year-old man on Monday, several hours after police attempted to stop the man’s car.
The agency says police tried to stop a vehicle that was driving with its headlights on around 1:20 a.m. and began a chase when the driver refused to stop.
The Independent Police Oversight Agency says the driver stopped the car about one kilometer away in a private residential lane in St-Lin-Laurentides, Que.
It says the man fled on foot before jumping into the nearby Jordan River. The provincial police also stated that they informed the oversight body that the man asked for help but they lost sight of him.
