Ontario Pharmacists: Antibiotic Shortage Continues

Ontario pharmacists said they are still experiencing shortages in both over-the-counter cold medications as well as some antibiotics for children.

The Ontario Pharmacists Association also said that while the situation is "better," there is still a significantly high demand for medications due to this year’s respiratory virus season.

The Canadian Ministry of Health stated that it has imported nearly 1.9 million bottles of medication to help alleviate the months-long ongoing shortage, but pharmacists say global shipments are not sufficient.

In the same context, Jane Pilcher, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives and Member Relations, said: "We are still seeing a situation where demand is very high and supply is not strong enough yet to declare that we are out of the shortage."

Medications were also distributed to hospitals and other retailers throughout November amid rising rates of COVID-19, influenza, and RSV virus infections.

Pilcher said Canada expects further supplies by the end of the year or early next year. However, she also warned that other countries around the world are now beginning to see preliminary reports of shortages.

While empty shelves in pharmacies can be shocking to consumers, Pilcher said the demand for antibiotics for children has become an increasing concern.

Also, pharmacist Kiro Masi from Lulor Pharmasave told CTV News Toronto: "I had a situation this morning where a child needed amoxicillin and there was none left. The order was returned over a month ago now. This has a knock-on effect on other antibiotics."

Pilcher added that some pharmacists have begun adjusting adult antibiotic capsules or tablets to fit children's doses.

The Canadian Ministry of Health did not mention the number of doses expected in its next shipment.
