Recently, the most stolen cars in Ontario in 2021 were named, and SUVs were the most popular in car thefts.

Équité Association, an organization aimed at reducing crime and insurance fraud, has issued its list of the top 10 stolen cars in Ontario and across Canada.

As stated in a press release, "The urban areas of Toronto and Montreal are rich hunting grounds for organized car theft crime gangs that transport stolen cars abroad to sell for profit. As Canada turns into a source country for the profitable export trade in stolen cars, the Honda CR-V tops this year's list."

Also, in October, the Toronto Police Service (TPS) held a press conference highlighting the significant rise in car thefts in the city, with 182 incidents occurring so far.

Rich Harris from the TPS Hold Up Squad pointed out that car theft targeted advanced and mid-range cars for criminal purposes or resale.

Although the Honda CR-V was the most stolen Canadian car with 4,117 thefts across the country, the Lexus RX series had a higher chance of being stolen in Ontario.

Across the province, 2,083 Lexus RX Series SUVs were stolen last year, nearly double the number of Honda CR-Vs stolen with 1,150 reported thefts. Ford F-150 trucks were also among the top three most stolen vehicles in Ontario last year.

Also, compared to the 2020 list, the Honda Civic joined the top three along with Lexus RX and Honda CR-V occupying the top two positions.

2. Honda CR-V (2016-2021), SUV, 1,150 thefts

3. Ford F150 series (2015-2020), pickup, 613 thefts

4. Toyota Highlander (2013-2019), SUVs, 575 thefts

5. Honda Civic (2016-2021), sedan, 380 thefts

6. Land Rover Range Rover Sport (2014-2020), SUV, 264 thefts

7. Honda Accord (2018-2021), sedan, 220 thefts

8. Chevrolet / GMC Silverado / Sierra 1500 series (1999-2006), pickup, 169 thefts

9. Ram 1500 series (2009-2018), pickup, 147 thefts

10. Toyota Tacoma (2016-2021), pickup, 144 thefts
