Lawyers for Ontario Premier Doug Ford and a senior regional minister are scheduled to discuss in court today in an attempt to exclude them from testifying in the federal emergency law inquiry. The Public Order Emergency Commission had summoned Ford and then Attorney General Sylvia Jones last week to testify in the investigation. Ford and Jones also filed an application to the federal court for judicial review, arguing that the summons order should be canceled because they cannot testify due to parliamentary privilege, which grants immunity to current politicians. The commissioner also stated that Ford and Jones overused the privilege and that their request should be denied.
Also, the commission is examining the federal government's use of the Emergency Act to end the so-called Freedom Convoy protests in Ottawa and Windsor, Ontario, last winter. Additionally, the commission wants to hear from Ford and Jones about how they handled the occupation (protests) in downtown Ottawa and the traffic blockade from the United States at the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor.
