The government of Newfoundland and Labrador is offering large sums of money in an attempt to entice doctors, nurses, and paramedics working outside the province to return home, as doctors who were born, educated, trained, or have previous practice in the province are eligible to receive $100,000 if they agree to return to Newfoundland and Labrador to work for at least five years. The government also announced on Tuesday that nurses and paramedics who meet the same criteria will receive a payment of no less than $50,000 if they commit to this for three years. Like many provinces, the healthcare system in Newfoundland and Labrador is suffering from labor shortages, where emergency rooms in rural areas of the province have been intermittently closed throughout the summer and fall as the province struggles to find doctors to keep them open. A survey conducted by the provincial medical association estimates that nearly a quarter of the population is without a family doctor. Also, the province is calling the latest recruitment initiative Come Home 2022, named after its 2022 tourism campaign launched last year to encourage those who have moved away to return home for visits. Although the main motive of the campaign is to attract expatriate healthcare workers to Newfoundland and Labrador, there are incentives for professionals who have no ties to the province, as Osborne said doctors in this group could qualify for $50,000 if they agree to a five-year commitment, while nurses and paramedics could receive up to $30,000 for three years, depending on their credentials.
