A high school in Scarborough was opened today after a child was seriously injured in a stabbing incident inside the building. The incident occurred around 3 PM on Monday at Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute at 3663 Danforth Avenue, east of Birchmount Road.

According to Toronto Police, officers found a 17-year-old teenager in the school office upon arrival at the scene, suffering from a stab wound. Young said paramedics arrived shortly after and transported the victim to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Also, a spokesperson for the Toronto District School Board, Ryan Bird, confirmed late Monday afternoon that the victim is in grade 12, and said social workers were brought in to provide support "to all those affected" by this incident.

Birchmount Park Collegiate was also placed on lockdown for about two and a half hours after the stabbing, which is the second incident at the school so far this year. In April, a 14-year-old boy was seriously injured after being stabbed outside the school shortly after students were dismissed that day. Two weeks ago, an 18-year-old man was fatally shot outside Woburn Collegiate, near Markham and Ellesmere roads. A 15-year-old boy was injured during that incident.

Toronto Police, who reported interviewing any students believed to have possibly been involved in or witnessed the incident, said they do not believe there is any "public safety concern at this time." School safety is a top priority for Toronto Police. In fact, as of last evening, Toronto Police had not released any suspect information in order to maintain the "integrity of the investigation."

On Tuesday morning, Toronto Police told CP24 that they had identified a suspect, but he has not yet been arrested.
