My trip to Morocco .. a bright station of memory

Away from the challenges of hope and pain that we live these days as we see humanity beginning to lose its values and the most important foundations of its meanings, I preferred to escape from this disappointing reality to the corridors of memory to pick one of my beautiful memories.
In March 2020, I was invited to visit the Kingdom of Morocco, the country I visited more than twenty years ago when I got married and went then to spend my first vacation with my wife.
Because I am of Palestinian origin specifically, I was warmly welcomed, and I discovered that the people of Morocco love Palestine and have a lot of affection for Palestinians.
Truly, these noble feelings made me keep many details about my first trip to Morocco, and the Moroccans became very special to me.
It is well known that the Moroccan people are hospitable by nature and respect their visitors regardless of their nationalities and cultures, but their interest in Palestinians has always been exceptional.
Therefore, when I was invited to visit Morocco two years ago, I accepted with great pleasure and I was eager to return to that country that still lives in my memory. Twenty years have passed and many questions crossed my mind: I wonder what has changed in those twenty years in that country I loved with all my heart?!
When I arrived at the airport, I found nothing but a smile carrying a message of love, welcome, and respect. This is Morocco as I knew it on my first visit and it remains true to itself.
During my journey from Casablanca, our arrival station, to my accommodation place in Rabat, our destination city on this official trip, I noticed great development and the magnitude of change that made me happy for these achievements. My trip was exceptional by all standards.
Our journey began to unfold from the first moment, with the warmth of welcome and care for us being the hallmark of the trip.
I found no greater comfort than what was given to us, and when our visit program started, there were many meetings with senior officials including ministers and others. I found in all of them the spirit of the genuine Moroccan official who established the first impression from my first visit that the Moroccan people are a great people.
I met competent ministers with a high sense of responsibility and they were well-informed of all the details related to their ministries’ affairs. Most importantly, they had a national spirit and full loyalty to it, which made them sincere and keen on presenting an honorable image of their country not only to me but to the whole world.
I met a minister whom I can only describe as an ambitious, generous, and noble person, an honest man in whom I felt humility, high competence, and good character.
I also met another minister who is a great scholar with a lot of rich information. A man zealous about his religion and Arabism. His response caught my attention and was an important lesson for me when I asked him about the term "Islamic extremism". He replied:
There is no such thing as Islamic extremism; Islam is not an extremist religion just as all religions are not extremist. Rather, there are extremist Muslims as there are extremists among all religions and other sects. Therefore, we should not beat ourselves or make ourselves the accused while we are the victims. I understand what you meant, but you are a generation that should be proud of your Islamic identity and culture, and should not see yourselves as accused but see yourselves as creative people and inspiring thinkers so that you can be part of the social fabric you live in to influence it and be partners in its construction, prosperity, and flourishing.
He concluded by saying: Be ambassadors of your religion and identity and do not get distracted by wrong concepts that will drain your mind and energy.
Yes, this scholarly minister spoke thoughts that reflect the essence of the selection mechanism for such competencies, which for me was a source of inspiration. Thus, he confirmed that the size of the nation and that Morocco with all its components represents a conscious cultural mosaic that does not slip into distorted concepts that may target religion and identity, even if the general political stances are temporary or natural with their pros and cons within the challenges they face and the conditions they require.
Finally, congratulations to Morocco for its culture, identity, and its inclusive social mosaic that paved the way for the development of this beautiful country, which has become an important destination for anyone who wants to explore new investment opportunities or even spend a tourist vacation in places worth visiting, not only because they are beautiful but because the Kingdom of Morocco is the most beautiful with the spirit of its people, their generosity, and its historical heritage.
Thanks to Morocco with all its components for the generous invitation and the excellent hospitality. Yes, before we left and departed a day before the international borders closed due to the Corona pandemic, we knew that we were in our country before the Kingdom of Morocco told us so, which in turn secured our return trip without any hardship or trouble!
A bright moment from the memory stock I wanted to pause at in this article to convey a clear message that loyalty and belonging to the homeland and its issues are not achieved by appearances and false slogans, but require sincere collective work and effort accompanied by a pure intention to elevate it and maintain it in security and safety.
