Last weekend, social media began to comment on and criticize the posters that appeared in the streets of Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. The municipal authorities, who received reports of these posters, immediately dispatched crews to search for and remove them.
These posters organize activities between parents and children but clearly state that only white mothers and children are invited to participate. The aim is to escape diversity and create an activity environment for European parents and children to feel a sense of belonging. The contact information at the bottom of the poster indicates that the event is organized by a group called Tri-City White Parents and Children.
The three cities refer to Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, and Port Moody.
The City of Coquitlam said that after learning of the incident, it immediately sent people to stations and other public places to search for and remove these posters.
A statement from the city government and the mayor of the city indicated that the poster clearly excludes certain ethnic groups and is racist, and there is no place for this practice in the city, which is unwelcome. Both the city and the City of Port Coquitlam ask citizens to contact the police if they discover such new posters.
The population of the City of Coquitlam and the City of Port Coquitlam is 150,000 and 62,000, respectively, and both places have a large number of ethnic groups.
Steve September, the head of the Vancouver Anti-Racism Coalition, stated that Canada is not a white country but a multicultural one. Groups dedicated to only white people teach children only about xenophobia. However, he also mentioned that he was encouraged by the response of internet users and municipalities to the posters.
