Japan warned that a new wave of coronavirus infections is apparently spreading rapidly nationwide, urging people to be especially cautious before the upcoming long weekend and the imminent summer school holidays.
Japan has recently witnessed an increase in new COVID-19 cases to levels not seen since early this year, with Tokyo recording 16,878 new infections on Wednesday, the highest level since February, while nationwide infections exceeded 90,000.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said at a press conference, "We had a total of 94,466 new reported infections nationwide yesterday, with the number of new cases increasing 2.14 times compared to last week, and we are witnessing rapid expansion."
