Alberta Premier Danielle Smith won the seat for the Brooks-Medicine Hat district in the south of the province in a by-election yesterday, allowing her to sit as a member of the legislative assembly in Edmonton.
Smith was also elected leader of the United Conservative Party (UCP) governing Alberta on October 6 last year, succeeding the party leader and outgoing premier, Jason Kenney.
She also officially assumed the position of premier in less than a week after that and was waiting for the opportunity to enter the legislative assembly as a member again, having previously represented the Highwood district south of Calgary, Alberta's largest city, for three years between 2012 and 2015.
Additionally, Smith won her new parliamentary seat yesterday, securing 54.5% of the votes, ahead of Gwendoline Dirk, the candidate of the New Democratic Party (Alberta's NDP), who received 26.7% of the votes. The aforementioned party, left-leaning, constitutes the official opposition in the legislative assembly.
Furthermore, 12,695 voters participated in the poll, representing a turnout rate of about 37%.
