Italy is considering investment from the luxury American electric car company "Tesla," amid opposition from residents to plans to build a Tesla factory outside Berlin.
Today, Economy Minister Adolfo Urso indicated before the Industry Committee of the Chamber of Deputies in Rome that a plan for a major expansion in Germany was rejected.
Urso said: "This will definitely lead to a decision by the group," adding that they have been in discussions with Tesla for several months and "we are receiving a very positive response. But this is a process that requires caution."
He also pointed to contacts with car manufacturers from Asia, referring to the Chinese electric car company "BYD."
Michel Zhu, Managing Director of "BYD Europe," a subsidiary of the giant Chinese car company "BYD," said yesterday, Tuesday, that the Italian government is in communication with the company as part of the government's efforts to attract a new car company to the country alongside Stellantis, which produces Italian Fiat cars.
He added that the company's establishment of a second factory in Europe depends on its sales, "and we are making very good progress."
This comes while the government of Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni plans to attract a new major car company to Italy after Stellantis hinted at the possibility of moving some of its production from Italy to other less costly countries.
There was a clear majority against Tesla's expansion plans in a non-binding vote in the municipality of Grünheide outside Berlin in Brandenburg state earlier this month.
The car manufacturer wants to build a charging station, warehouses, and a daycare center for factory workers, in an area adjacent to the company covering about 170 hectares
