The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, announced this Monday morning, August 29, 2022, that he is on his way to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, which has been subjected to strikes in recent weeks that have raised fears of a major nuclear accident.
Grossi wrote in a tweet, "The mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency is on its way to Zaporizhzhia, we must protect the security of Ukraine and the largest plant in Europe," explaining that the team will arrive at the site "later this week."
Grossi had been demanding for several months to allow the agency to visit the site, stressing the "actual danger of a nuclear disaster."
Meanwhile, the United States said that Russia does not want to acknowledge the imminent radiation danger at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, adding that this is the reason Moscow is blocking the issuance of the final draft of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty agreement.
The U.S. State Department said in a statement, "The Russian Federation alone decided to block consensus on the final document at the conclusion of the Tenth Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Russia did this to obstruct the wording that acknowledges the imminent radiation danger at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine."
Local officials said on Sunday that Russian artillery shelled Ukrainian towns last night that are separated only by a river from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, increasing the suffering of the residents as reports about the shelling around the plant raised fears of a radiation disaster.
