The Canadian Parks agency said that the heavy rainfall over the weekend in parts of Jasper National Park played a significant role in suppressing fire activity, but the wet weather also comes with a warning.

In a daily update on the local wildfire situation, the Canadian Parks agency stated that parts of the national park received more than 30 mm of rain last Friday night.

Temperature drops are also expected, which the agency says could further reduce fire activity.

However, Parks Canada warns everyone that the rain may make the slopes and burned trees unstable, and gusty or changing winds may cause trees weakened by the fires with shallow roots to fall.

Last weekend, the containment of wildfires that led to the evacuation of the park and the town of Jasper for weeks was announced.

Jasper National Park and the town remain closed to visitors, but Highway 16 through the park is open and the Icefields Parkway connecting Jasper to Banff and Lake Louise was reopened to traffic last week.
