The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, stated that the consequences of what is happening in the Gaza Strip will be devastating for the entire region, stressing that things have reached a breaking point.
Guterres said at today’s Security Council session on Friday: "I wrote to the Security Council citing Article 99 because we have reached a breaking point, and I fear that the consequences of what is happening in Gaza will be devastating for the security of the entire region."
The Secretary-General pointed out that "we have already witnessed the extension of what is happening in Gaza to the occupied West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen."
He added: "We expect the events in Gaza to lead to a complete collapse of public order and increased pressure for mass displacement to Egypt, and 85% of Gaza’s population have been forced to leave their homes without the bare minimum of living conditions."
Guterres confirmed that "the restrictions imposed by Israel in Gaza make it difficult for UN organizations to meet the needs of the population, and the conditions necessary to effectively deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza no longer exist."
He stressed that food supplies for Gaza’s residents are running out, and according to the World Food Program, there is a serious risk of famine.
