Google has agreed to pay 100 million Canadian dollars annually, equivalent to about 74 million US dollars, to support news organizations in Canada as part of a deal with the government, ending a dispute that was set to result in the blocking of news links from its services.
The agreement comes just weeks before a national law comes into effect, which will require tech companies to pay news outlets for using their content online.
After the announcement of this agreement, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, stated that the deal with Google will not affect its decision to block news links in Canada.
Commenting on this deal, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Google has agreed to provide appropriate support for journalists, expressing his regret that Meta continues to completely shirk any responsibility towards Canadian institutions.
