It is expected that the suffering of the global food market will increase in the future after the main industry union in Thailand announced that sugar production in the country will decrease by nearly a fifth in the upcoming harvest season due to severe drought.
Rangsit Hiangrat, the director of Thailand's largest sugar production company, "Thai Sugar Millers," confirmed that sugar production in the country will decrease by about a fifth in the upcoming harvest season due to drought, which may put further pressure on the global market.
He also pointed out that production is expected to decrease by 18 percent to about 9 million tons in the 2023-2024 season, as it is likely that the intensity of heat and severe drought will increase in the coming years, which may drive some farmers to cultivate cassava in hopes that the crop will withstand the heat better.
It is worth mentioning that Thailand is the second-largest exporter of sugar in the world, after Brazil, so the decline in production will put more pressure on the global market.
Rangsit also predicted that the country's sugar exports would drop to 6 million tons next year, while 8 million tons were recorded this year.
