After German authorities foiled a plot last week aimed at overthrowing the current government, suspected to have been attempted by a far-right group, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said in an interview with the newspaper (Bild am Sonntag) published on Sunday that the country intends to tighten gun possession laws.
German police arrested 25 people last week on suspicion of involvement in the plot, which shocked many in one of Europe's most stable democracies. Many of the suspects also belong to the (Reich Citizens) movement, which the prosecution says rejects the existence of the modern German state.
According to the government official, the group aimed to install a former royal family member as the country's leader.
The minister also said in the interview with the newspaper that the movement poses a growing threat to Germany, considering its base expanded from two thousand to 23 thousand in the past year. The newspaper quoted her saying: "These are not harmless crazies, but suspected terrorists who are now in pre-trial detention."
Before the raids, authorities had already confiscated weapons from more than a thousand members of the Reich Citizens movement. But it is believed that at least 500 others hold firearms licenses in a country where private possession of firearms is rare.
Also, prosecutors said the suspects include individuals who possess weapons and know how to use them, and who tried to recruit former and current military personnel and have stockpiles of weapons.
Additionally, Faeser told the newspaper: "We want all authorities to exert maximum pressure to disarm them," pointing out that this is the reason the government intends "soon to tighten gun laws."
